DIY Abstract Canvas Painting

After I graduated college, I searched for artwork that would make my apartment feel more mature. Less posters and more canvases. But at all of the stores I looked at, the artwork was priced way too high for my recent grad budget. That was, until I realized I could make pieces of my own.

I went to my local craft store, with a coupon in hand, and I found a 24×48 canvas– perfect to fit over a sofa or a bed.

I picked up seven paint colors, and grabbed my 3 inch paint brush.

Then, I squirted lines of each color onto the canvas.

Next, I took my brush and spread the paint out in straight lines to each end of the canvas.

I wasn’t totally happy with how the colors looked, so I waited a few minutes for the first coat to become tacky before putting more squirts of color on top (if you don’t wait, all of the colors will end up mixing together to create one gray or brown shade). Repeat until you are happy with the result.

At the end, I mix all of the colors together in equal parts and then use that color to paint the sides of the canvas to make it look more finished and to cover up any drips that might have happened.

It took me a few tries before I was satisfied with how the colors looked, but here is the final product! A large modern canvas for under $30!
